I always add a little ginger to all my soups and at least a tablespoon of chinese cooking wine to add a little richness. Our family version of lotus root soup can use pork. beef, or chicken plus a little dried tangerine peel, some carrots, and chinese turnip (daikon radish).

The more carrots you use will make the soup sweeter. I leave out the dried cuttlefish as my kids don't like it. Am planning to make a big pot of lotus root soup this week. Yum!
