I think that there are a few versions of these famous noodles and I myself prefer the drier version, I'm not quite sure if what you had was dan dan mian, but it does sound like it..I suppose that the spiciness was also numbing, which comes from the Sichuan peppercorns..hope that helps!

I had a Dan Dan Mian at the canteen in main park in Chengdu where the commemorative plaque of the 1911 Railway Protection Movement is located. That one had a dark and rich red sauce brimming around the edges but otherwise looked like yours. I don't know why all the recipes I have seen for this dish look dry. The one I had was loaded with the spicy red sauce. That sauce was spicy enough that my mouth was on fire for hours, and I'm Indian and used to spicy foods. I thought what I ate was Dan Dan Mian but maybe it was not. Any idea if its not dan dan mian what it may be?

That looks good. I love dan dan mian. I had it many times while I lived in Hong Kong. I, too, prefer crushed peanut on top rather than adding peanut butter in the broth. Thanks for sharing.

Jen, looks awesome! Love it. I grew up eating it w/o the peanut butter, too (and I seem to recall julienned cucumber, too, for a cooling element), but the local place near my house here in San Francisco likes doing it w/ the peanut butter.

Dan Dan Mian is one of my favorite noodles. Probably I might have spoiled by tons of variations from eateries here thus have been making it less recently. Adore your idea of serving the sauce separately, I would serve my noodles with lots of green onions and peanuts : ).
